What are these and can, should they be left on
My new batteries had a plastic cap covering the posts. You can cut off the side for the post you are using.
My question is this. Can you leave the plastic on the unused post? Should you leave them on? Take them off? Thanks |

I always take them off when installing new batteries. They kinda look like crap when left on.

From what I gather, they just protect the post when in storage/on a pallet of batteries. They also identify the negative/positive posts, even though that's also stamped on the battery itself anyway.

Get the plastic shields off, just another place for corrosion to hide later. One might say "lead doesn't corrode", while true, if any corrosion got in there from an attached cable or terminal, it would just be another thing to deal with. And just another place for acid to hide.

I always cut them in half and left them on . one less contact point for the wrench

I trimmed them down, put some dielectric grease on the posts and put them back on. Like Swan said, less wrench contact area.
