checking amps
The radio shack voltmeter manual says to check DC amps I need to disconnect and run the wires in a series. So I disconnected the main negative post and hooked red to the terminal post and black to the wires, lifted the back, turned on the meter to the 200dc settting and when I pressed the pedal, nothing. The wires seem a bit thin to be doing all this work. Not all that comfortable doing something electrical I know nothing about so thought I'd check in here.

Re: checking amps
A small volt meter WILL NOT measure the amp draw of a cart motor. It WILL fry the meter. The measure a load like this you need a "shunt" that has a meter attached to that.

Re: checking amps
The manual also states the RANGE of DC amps the meter is capable of measuring, and your golf cart is WAY PAST that range. The meter is probably capable of measuring 200 miliamps, which is two tenths of one amp. Your cart is capable of drawing over 200 amps.

Re: checking amps
ok I give up, I'm gonna start looking at replacing the controller, I dont think the power is the source of my low speed issue anyways.

Re: checking amps
you could also get one of these:
http://mcmelectronics.com/product/TE...-7226-/72-7226 we use the fluke version of this in our telco facility and it works really well for measuring amp draw. |

Re: checking amps
Most meters have a fuse. It is just for that reason! I inadvertently hooked up a 25A draw on mine. It's rated at 10A max! The meter's Ok, you should have seen the fuse!
