The general consensus here seems to be that if you are buying a new charger get one that is not dependent on the OBC. I suppose if you find a good used CC charger that would be a different story, but if buying new seems to make sense to take the OBC out of the loop.

I have an older DS (2002) and if the time ever comes when I have to change out my charger I'll go this route.

If it’s a Powerdrive 2 the rectifier is bad.
Usually the PD2 has the rectifier mounted to the rear panel of the charger behind the transformer. It will be a small square about 1.5” x 1.5”.
There was an update kit for a larger rectifier, and it’s also possible to install the older style diode bridge (literally looks like a bridge) so it usually helps to open the case and see what you have.
The rectifier has to have heat/ thermal transfer compound applied to the base when it is screwed onto the case, otherwise it will burn out. Some people use grease but it doesn’t work quite as well as actual thermal transfer paste.
