I am going to a piece of exhaust clamp just cause it is what I have, I will let ya know how it works.

Exhaust clamp worked great, here are some pictures including shaft and splines which feels loose.

I don't see why it wouldn't. A 4 stroke doesn't run in reverse but the driven clutch doesn't know that. It just operates with what power is delivered to it.

My point is the whole system (engine/clutches) spin forward and then backward for reverse. Being you need to twist the spring I thought it might be an issue in reverse, I suppose I would not be using reverse alot and would be rare that I would need extra torque in reverse. How many have done this mod? did it make a big difference? Happy with results?

You will see a difference in torque.... As far as reversing the clutch vs the spring index, I really don't know if the extra torque would be lost per se when reversing the engine. I had the shorter belt on my 89 and it pulled like crazy.
