G1 6" Lift Clutch Rub
1983 Yamaha G1 almost all stock. I installed a Jakes 6" Lift. Everything went smooth... except the rear lift pushed the rear suspension down so far that the clutch cover doesn't quite have enough space to clear the frame. It's not missing by much, but enough that I don't think I can "adjust" and shift things around to work.
I spent the morning reading other threads, several threads reference frame modification, but I couldn't find any details, except for one set of images that is a pretty major modification and rebuild of the frame arm. This is a stock motor and runs great, so I'm hesitant to replace the clutch. I'm wondering if anyone has any simpler solutions, or pictures/details of what you've done to resolve this issue? |

Re: G1 6" Lift Clutch Rub
Replacing the clutch with another one will not fix your problem. Notching the frame is the best way to deal with the clutch rubbing. I didn't cut my frame, I heated it with oxy acetylene until cherry red and hammered the clearance in. It is easier than cutting and welding in a patch IMO.

Re: G1 6" Lift Clutch Rub
Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of that, good idea. I hate the idea of removing the engine, to get in there with that much heat. Wondering if it's possible to just lift the engine tray up high enough to get under it and heat, hammer and adjust the frame? Guessing you pulled the engine?

Re: G1 6" Lift Clutch Rub
Nope...didn't pull the motor. Take the clutch off so you have some room and use a piece of metal as a heat shield.
