I'm not looking forward to taking the engine out again though. On the plus side, I can follow the manual and hopefully have a next to perfect engine again. Do I need to hone the piston head itself too along with the cylinder walls pizzaman?

just the cylinder walls, you do need to run the honing stone in and out of the cylinder when its rotating so it makes a cross pattern! this allows some oil to stay in the bore to keep the rings and piston lubed.
