I have decided to go ahead and replace the crank seals.
I ordered a clutch pulling bolt to make the job easier. If this doesn't help I guess I will pull the jug next. seal.jpg bolt.jpg |

hard to tell by the pics but it looks like the exhuast has the cross over tube and that would make it an 82 J17 engine. 80-90 psi is perfect copression.
this engine has a few odd parts so beware of that. it uses different reed cage and reeds as well as cylinder, head and of course the exhaust. it does use a different carb as well, but the only i belive its just jetting that is differnt. look at of the fan side of the motor on the case next to the carb rounded portion of the case that contours with the fan shroud there will be a serial number there. if it starts with J17 is the odd 82 |

.Tore it down to the seal.
seal123.jpg Made a Plate to pull the seal. seal1.jpg Use 4 screws to pull it out. seal2.jpg here is the seal out. seal3.jpg Found a bare wire touching the frame when tearing down the flywheel side. I don't know what this wire goes to yet seal4_LI.jpg ... |
