Default CC Exhaust Upgrade

After doing the 18HP Vanguard upgrade on my cart, I started thinking about upgrading the exhaust system. In PM'ing with Ron, aka: TheNewGuy, about his exhaust plan to use a VW muffler, and build a system around that, I decided to do the same as I think he came up with very NEAT idea and solution. Once seeing that plan, I was hooked....... Finally I have finished the upgrade, with a few mods from Ron's original plan. Thanks Ron!!!!!

I started with the same VW muffer that he did, and removed all the 'pipes' and almost all of the 'collector'.

Since the muffler cavity had no baffles, and I wanted to supress some of the
exhaust sound, I filled the cavity with stainless steel scrubbing pads, which
can be seen in the picture above. The 'collector' was re-built to mate to the
stainless flex, by using a 1 1/4 to 3/4 reducer, ground down to make it fit
and recess into the hole where the collector used to live.

This reducer was welded into the hole, then a 3/4 close nipple and 3/4" street elbow were used to mate the muffler & flex to the exhaust manifold(the flex 'threads' very nicely onto the street el...).

The muffler was hung from the rearmost frame member of the cart using
galvanized 3" pipe hangers. It would have been much easier to use the
galvanized perforated strap also used for hanging pipe (heavier, more
available and no 'mods' required).

The final hookup from the manifold to the street el without the clamps
installed yet.

The installed system looks absolutely GREAT on the cart . The exhaust tips are about 5" inside the edge of the rear step, preventing someone from making contact (ouch....) with them.

Tom of CPP provided the stainless exhaust manifold, stainless flex & clamps, making this an easy mod to put together..... Another 'attaboy' for CPP for their help!

Compared to the stock muffler, it has a richer sound, at about the same sound level, with a very distinctive "big-block" tone when accellerating.
