Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
Ok, so i got it open.
I left the pmc in a room which gets really hot these days when the sun is shining. I was looking out and I saw that the side had popped: So I popped that off, and took of the plastic over the screws with a knife. I had to wiggle the front and go at it with a knife to get it loose: About two minutes later: The insides: Mosfet and diode: Anyone sees anything out of the ordinary? Some white powderish gunk on the bottom, probably water got in or something. Any way of checking the mosfets? What mosfets can i use to replace? Have searched for the numbers on the mosfets but cant find anything online. Regards |

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
Remove (desolder) the logic board from the side of the heat sink. Look for a small cylindrical 10 uf capacitor near the end of the logic board where the thermistor (temperature sensor) attaches to the logic board. These capacitors have a tendency to leak electrolyte and fail. Remove the capacitor and inspect the bottom for leakage. Clean the logic board area under the capacitor and replace it with a new one.

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
I got the logic board off. I hope the pictures got upplades. The close up photos is of the 10uf capacitor I believe? Also found a solder above the capacitor that looks corroded. Could that be an issue?
The capacitor looks fine. Need to see if I can check if its ok. |

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
Got the capacitor off, didn’t look as nice from underneath…
Can i buy a new 10uf 35v capacitor or am i missing something? Next question: could the capacitor being bad lead to the the pmc not sending any power to the motor? In short; is this the issue or should i check something else while im at it? Also, thank you all for being so helpful and friendly :) |

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
Clean the board thoroughly and replace the capacitor with a new one. That should solve your issue. When the capacitor fails, the drive signal to the MOSFET's is severely compromised. You can use any 10 uf capacitor rated at 35 v or higher. BE SURE TO GET THE POLARITY CORRECT when you install the new capacitor.
It might be a good idea to check the resistance of the thermistor. It should be about 50K ohms + or - 20% at room temperature. |

Just to make sure, is this the correct capacitor to order?

Yes, that will be OK.

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
Ok. When i measure the thermistor(orange) I get 17.8k ohm. The logic board has been in a shed which is fairly warm, approximately 30-35degrees celsius. Seems ok?

Hmm, think I checked the wrong one. The orange one just beside where the capacitor was is measuring 48.1k ohm.

Re: Melex 252 Curtis controller 1204 bad?
The thermistor is not on the logic board and it is not visible in any of your pictures. It attaches to the aluminum heat-sink with a screw. There are two small wires that connect the thermistor to the end of the logic board. I assume you have already disconnected those wires. Measure the resistance between those two wires being careful not to let your fingers interfere with the resistance measurement. If the thermistor fails, it will cause the current limit of the controller to be reduced. If it measures high or low just replace it on the logic board with a fixed resistor (47K or 51K).
