Default Yamaha Drive Controller gone out, replaced then 2nd one failed a week later -Help?

I have a yamaha Drive (2013) with the moric controller. The cart stopped running and we put a used controller from a 2014 cart that was running good. a week later the cart failed again. Could something outside of the controller be frying them.

I have plenty of take off parts from other yamaha's that we have upgraded to 500amp sepex conversions, but I don't want to ruin another good controller without finding out what could be causing this. Solenoid is new and good (tried it on another cart).

Motor shorted maybe? Drawing too much power? Or harness rubbed through at some point.

Are you talking about the main wiring harness? I could swap the motor with a used one I have, but is there a way to test it without doing that?

Most likely the main harness, if the motor wiring was grounding out there would be probably much sparkage. You can fully disconnect the motor and test with an ohm meter each set of terminals and from each to ground.

Would the "much sparkage" be inside the motor? Because when the first controller went out i heard an electrical sizzle that sounded kind of like i was welding, just not as loud, coming from somewhere back there.

It would have occurred inside the motor if the motor was shorted. Or could have been inside the controller, when it died. If you didn't see any damage to the main harness then the noise probably came from one of those two.

I would pull, disassemble and inspect motor. If motor is damaged enough to sizzle, the damage will be visible.

Thanks, I'll try that today. At least that would narrow it down a bit

Most likely bad motor brushes. The Hitachi motor has very undersized brushes and it fails often.

I took the motor apart, the brushes look good and the armature is nice and clean. I tested the posts to see if they are grounded to motor case and they are not. everything on the motor looks good.

Does anyone have a pinout diagram for the yamaha drive so i can test the harness?
