Carryall starter continues to "start" even when running
Maybe I should know this already but my 01' Carryall 6 key start cart has me wondering. Should the starter continue acting like a starter even after it is running? When I turn the key switch to "start" the engine turns over properly, but when key is released to the "run" position the starter continues to crank when the cart is not running. To confirm the starter is still engaged even when the engine is running I pulled off the spark plug wire to shut down the engine but the starter continues to crank without missing a beat. I've driven it a few miles and it doesn't appear to be problematic yet but also doesn't seem right. Any thoughts from the experts? Thanks

Sounds like a sticking relay or solenoid perhaps?

Thanks for the response, I thought the same thing. I forgot to mention that I changed solenoids with one from another cart as well as new aftermarket, new key switch and tried both used and new relay. Also checked wiring about 10 times and did basic starter tests from cc repair manual. That's why I'm trying to convince myself this is what key start cc's do. Tomorow I will trade out the starter just because I've covered all the other bases I can think of.

I think that is normal. Mine has always been that way. Turn the key to off.

Yes. That’s normal operation. The solenoid stays energized the entire time. That’s how the starter generator charges the battery when the engine is running.

Not true, there is a large diode, looks like the voltage reg, that allows current to flow back into the battery when the engine is running.. The S/G cannot 'start' and charge at the same time; The diode is frame mounted just outside of the black box and is connected across the 2 large terminals of the solenoid |

Re: Carryall starter continues to "start" even when running
The diode is there for flyback protection when the solenoid coil circuit opens, it prevents the voltage spike from the magnetic field collapse from arcing your micro-switches.
The solenoid stays engaged the whole time you have your foot on the pedal. |
