Upgrade my battery in 2003 gas club car
I have a 2003 club car gas Kawasaki engine and replaced the old battery with a small car battery with the 650 cranking apps and is working well except the solenoid is getting hot after a few minutes and takes time to cool down before it will crank back up. I can slightly tap the Solenoid and it will crank right up every time, did I make a mistake using a different kind of cranking battery or does the solenoid need to be upgraded also ?

You might get better results if you post in the Gas Club Car section. You're in the Electric section.

Welcome to BGW Tabor!
Moved to Gas CC... Most likely your solenoid is going bad, get a "continuous duty" solenoid from a BGW sponsor, or local cart shop, Don't match one up at an auto parts store, those are "intermittent duty" and won't last long! |

Re: Upgrade my battery in 2003 gas club car
Agreed, sounds like a failing solenoid. Get an OEM solenoid from david hicks of revolution golf cars, and should be fine. CCA of the battery is not going to affect this, just make the cart start easier. Once it is running the cart js charging the battery, not drawing from it.
Dont get a $20 amazon/ebay solenoid. Not only are they junk and.probably wont last more than a couple months, I nearly burned a cart to the ground when I had one fail. |

Re: Upgrade my battery in 2003 gas club car
Check your charge voltage output from the starter generator and make sure it's in the correct range.
Put the cart in maintenance mode or jack the rear wheels off the ground. Using a voltmeter clip the red lead on the White cable terminal on the starter generator. Black lead on the battery negative terminal. Start the engine and run it at low speed and check the voltage should be around 12.5, then slowly run the engine up to full speed. the voltage should climb to around 13.9 to 14.5v and stay there. If the voltage goes higher the regulator is failing or there is a problem in the starter generator. Most likely the solenoid has burned contacts inside and just needs to be replaced. |
