Charging 12v batteries individually.

Hello All;

I'm going to prove what a rookie I am here, but I have a question....

I just bought a cart and it came with a dead charger. (powerwise QE).

I'd like to charge the batteries individually since I don't know what their state of charge is currently.....

I'm assuming, but just checking....

Should I disconnect all the batteries from each other before charging them?

It isn't necessary. Just charge two series 6v at a time with a 12v charger or individually with a 6v charger.

That said, replace the charger as soon as possible. Individal charging will not keep the pack equalized.

but I guess the not necessary part still applies, only I just hook 1 battery at a time...

Sorry I wasn't clear..... I have 4 12v batteries.

you do not have to unhook anything, just check the water levels, and make sure the water is a 1/4" above the plates, and charge them, use distilled water only

Thanks Rib.. Water is all good. It actually came with some fancy watering system (minus the gun) that has a window on top of each cell with an indicator. Show's all full.

You will need a golf cart battery charger soon. The 12v charger will not have the correct algorithm and pretty soon the batteries will suffer from improper charging.

I'm on it. Either the seller will furnish one, or I'll buy one if he screws me... I'm only charging them to get them full as I don't know how drained they are, or how long they've been sitting..

Charging them individually is way smarter than letting them sit waiting for the correct charger especially if state of charge is unknown. Good choice HJ

Agreed to a point..... you don't want the batteries to sit in a state of discharge. but if you don't have so much as a voltage reading on them the how will you know what you are doing to them with the 12v charger
