Default Brake adjustment

I know brakes are supposed to be self adjusting, but what is initial setting when installing new shoes. Does self adjusting work in reverse or forward or both?

I don't think forward or reverse (or much moving at all) makes a difference. I pull the pin from the brake cable at the brake, and ratchet the brake lever there until it won't auto-adjust any more. Now that the brakes are real close to correct adjustment, you may need to adjust the brake pedal to get the cables hooked back up. Also, if you think you might need a brake adjustment, always follow this plan first, before you start adjusting at the pedal (pedal is the wrong place to start).

Reviving an old thread - how much travel should you get out of the brake lever with the cable removed? Mine seems to barely move with the cable. I don't know if it is a cable issue, or the arm/assembly. I'll pull it apart later and clean it.

Disassemble, clean and lube the moving parts. Don't mix up the parts--I believe they are side specific...
