Flame Polish Windshield -Anyone?
In the Pinball hobby, we carefully flame polish clear plastic ramps with a torch. It's amazing how clear the ramps get and look brand new.
Has anyone tried this method with a clear golf cart windshield? |

Re: Flame Polish Windshield -Anyone?
I use some emery cloth (comes on 1" wide roll) or a flapper wheel to remove any remaining saw blade marks, sanding "long way" not "cross way". This also removes the razor-sharp edges (cuts you just as good as broken glass, BE CAREFUL). Then use regular propane torch with green camping bottle, flame set to low-medium. DO NOT PAUSE ANYWHERE WHEN HEAT IS APPLIED TO PLASTIC, IT WILL RUIN THE PLASTIC! I hold the flame about 4" from the edge of the material. I travel about 4-6" per second, to the end, then go back to the begining where you started (Left to right, left to right, left to right, never back-and-fourth). This is pretty important, if you zig-zag back-and-fourth, the corners get too hot, and will start to bubble. Start with a scrap piece that you dont care much about, so you can fine-tune your prefered technique. I have only done this with golf cart windshield material, the amount of heat, and travel speed would need to be adjusted for thicker, or thinner material. I have had the whole peice warp slightly into a bubble shape after working several sides consecutively, it worried me that i had ruined the peice, but the warpage totally disappeared after it cooled. There are some really great articles on the internet about how to work with this stuff, from guys who build clear speaker boxes for car stereos. They are using much thicker material than i am, thick enough to drill & tap the edges to bolt it together.

Tried the flame polish on the windshield. No bueno. This must be a softer plastic than the clear ramps used in Pinballs. I'm going to try Plastix or Novus 2 followed by Novus 1.
