Cool 86-ezgo/marathon/gas / backfiring

ok i have a 86 ezgo marathon

main prob is when you give it gas it goes then if you let off and hit the gas to go it back fires and at camp its not cool any ideas on a fix for this ?

i had a idea of just swaping out the motor and rear end for a 4 stroke like my 97 club car then i have only one brand to stock parts for ( my fix )

My 89 does that occassionally and Dews suggestion is what I use to keep it in check

You need to have the carb butterfly closed completely when you let off of the gas.
Let off the gas pedal kills the spark and if the throttle plate (butterfly) is open even a little it will continue to draw fuel into the cylinder and then "BOOM" when you push pedal and add spark.
Linkage not just stopping against the stop screw, it has to stop/close in the carb throttle body.
