Default G16 Backfiring!

My 1997 G16 backfires when you let off of the gas pedal. If I drive it for more that a few minutes (engine gets warmed up) and let off of the pedal it backfires. If if pump the gas pedal several times, it backfires every time. Sounds like a machine gun! It always backfires after stopping. It is kind of a delayed reaction, 2-3 seconds later. Also, it has no low end. It is all or nothing! I can hear the clutch spinning and when it catches, its wide open or nothing. Goes very fast, but will not go less than 10 mph. Any advice?

It sounds to me like your throttle may be out of adjustment. Check your adjustments. Also check your air filter lid and make sure it is tight and properly sealed. Make sure the air filter bolted tight on the carburetor. Clean and adjust the carburetor properly. Make sure all the gaskets are good.

Maybe also check plastic manifold spacer isn't cracked. Between the head and carb. as well as a leaky exhaust gasket or pipe.
Then check to see if throttle is closing all the way, and adjust cable so it isn't holding it open.

Usually this is due to the throttle on the carb. not closing all the way after you let off the pedal. Simple throttle/pedal cable adjustment.

1 cable adjustment = take airfilter hose off and ensure butterfly is closing all the way
2 mixture= big mixture screw 1 1/2 turns out.
3 also make sure yopu have the right plug in it (neighbour had this issue) ngk bpr4es
or E3 3.22 plug (i run this one and am happy with it.)
