Re: G16 surging & backfireing
Loose carb or manifold? Fuel Mixture gone lean? Sticky or burnt intake valve? Those are just some of the symtoms of back fire in the intake.

Re: G16 surging & backfireing
Back fireing is useually caused by throttle shaft not completely closeing, useually adjustments on accelerator cables #1 or # 2. If the carb gaskets are damaged, could cause that. I have seen if the airbox to carb nuts are loose, can give that symptom. Let us know what you find.

Re: G16 surging & backfireing
The main jet is not adjustable. But the idle mixture is. You could try setting the idle mix but I don't think thats the problem. Backfire in the intake is from an air leak getting into the manafold. Thus a Lean mixture. Look for cracks or a bad gasket. Check compression. A Bad intake valve will cause it to. What you describe is typical of a vacuume leak. A good method to check for bad valves or leaks is to apply air into the spark plug hole with the piston at Compression TDC. I made a fitting out of an old spark plug and brazed an air hose connector to it. I use a paint regulator to reduce the air pressure. If there are any air leaks you will find them.

I had the same problem. It turned to be a crack in the muffler. It messed with the back preasure. Does it sound different? If so that is it.
