Default fe400 running issue carb???

i just got an fe400 engine installed it and im having issues with it. it doesnt always start. when it does run it runs rough.. everything is new... is there carb adjustments i should play with? i tried the one adjustment on the front and it runs pretty much the same wherever i adjust that to...

also... when it is running if i go down the road and get up to speed it run great. but on occasion it will shoot oil into the cylinder and shoot out a huge ploom of white smoke... whats going on here!?!?!?! im so frustrated with it right now...

I'm curious... are you using the stock air filter box? (you should be!)

And... for the ploom of smoke... by chance, have you disconnected the limiter, and adjusted the governor?
I did with my FE350, and I over revved, floated the valves briefly, the engine sputtered, and POOF... a big cloud of white smoke!

yes its running the stock air box. and no. this cart was stock with a 290 in it and that engine didnt have enough power for the mountain it has to climb at the lake. do you know by chance how to check the governor? and put it to stock settings? or a link to how to go about it the proper way? this one shouldnt have been touched as its my fathers and he doesnt touch that stuff. (i built it for him as a fathers day present ill have to post a pic.) and thats what i was thinking.. floating the valves... but i didnt understand why that happened if the governor wasnt ever touched...

Thanks! he is really happy with it except for the way this engine has been running... does the manual say anything about how to tune the carb??? there has got to be another adjuster on there some where other than the one on the front side....

Are you using the 400 carb or the 290? To set your low speed idle mixture, put the cart in service mode. Set the mixture screw at 2 turns out. Try and keep the cart running at an idle while slowly turning the mixture screw in then out. What your looking for Is the highest rpm you can obtain while at idle. You'll here the engine clean up and gain rpm when your there. These engines are finicky on the adjustment.
