Reducer wiring question
So I went ahead and bought a reducer off amazon to run my headlights and am pleased so far with it. But it's a simple design and I want to complicate it a little. As it is, it's a simple 4 wire design. Pos/ground to batteries, pos/ground to lights with an inline fuse. I want to run the reducer through the key switch so it's only on and drawing power from the battery when the cart itself is on. I'm at work and just started thinking of this so I'm not I front of the cart atm. If anyone has already done this and wants to share the path you took, I'd appreciate it.

If it does not have a 5th trigger wire then the only way to do this would be to find a 48 volt relay large enough (amp wise) to brake the incoming power supply and use the key switch to break the power to the coil on the relay... Otherwise you will need to replace with a unit that has a 5th or trigger wire...

The one I got came with 2 diagrams for wiring this into the system through the key switch.

not sure what the purpose of the relay is for, wouldn't the key switch do the same thing. your not drawing amps of the key switch, your drawing off the reducer.

If Your DC-DC voltage converter does not have a "trigger" wire and You wire the converter +48v input at the key switch, You will be drawing the entire power consumption OFF the key switch, which is not good.
That relay places a 0.02 amp load at they key switch and it has a 30 amp switching capacity. |

Maybe I could just put an on/off switch on the power wire between the reducer and the battery pack. Then just use that to break the connection rather than using the key switch. Then I could use that instead of the actual headlight switch by bypassing it. Put the on off swI ch where the headlight switch is currently so I don't have two switches to turn on the headlights.
Thoughts on that? |
