48v to 12v tobson 20a reducer gets too hot
I installed a reducer today and have installed many of them, but today this one got too hot to touch. No relay or switch was installed. Any reason why the relay got too hot. I had 12v on the 12v side.
I disconnected it for a bit to cool it off. When I connected the hot to the battery it sparked as it had a draw?? Nothing was connected to the 12v side though. |

Re: 48v to 12v tobson 20a reducer gets too hot
Unless something was pulling more than the 20a design or it is a faulty reducer.
As far as the spark, very normal when a reducer/converter is installed and also the draw from your controller. It is good to use a ~60w incandescent bulb between the pack Neg and cable to allow the energy to flow and then after a few seconds you can land the cable without a large spark. |

What Nole said is spot on.
But I have to ask. You say: "... the relay got too hot." Are you talking about a relay after the reducer, or did you mean the reducer? |

Mooncarter - I meant the reducer, sorry.
Nolefan4ever - Thanks for the input. I have them sending me another reducer. |

And reducer are getting to be so cheap these days it is hard to rule out an internal fault.
