First outing w/36 volt cart

This is my first post here, sorry if I ask some questions that have been asked already. A month or so ago, I bought a 86 cart down in Peachtree city, Georgia to use as a clays cart. I paid $450.00 for it, came with 2012 Trojan batteries and a charger. Pretty sure I got a good deal. It didn't have a rear seat, so over the past couple of weeks I fabricated one out of some scrap white oak and scrap metal I had lying around.
So, the stars aligned and I finally got to take it to the range today. For the most part I was happy with it, but I would really like to have a little more speed and power. Up hills it was painfully slow, I could have probably out run it with my lawnmower. Very happy that no one went with me, I'm not sure it would have pulled more than just me. Does this sound right? Kind of wondering if I have a resistor problem. I can feel 2 distinct speeds even though there are 5 coils.

I plan on getting some 2 or 4 gauge wire to make me some better cables with soon, but I was wondering....
I plan on getting one if the scottyb conversion kits for it at Christmas and I was thinking of sending my motor to Plumb Quick for one of the Bandit upgrades.
Can I or should I get the motor before I get the conversion kit?
At the moment I have stock wheels and tires on it. I do also plan a 3 inch spindle lift and some bigger wheels and tires too.
Just don't want to get the cart before the horse. I've read up on the 48 volt conversions, but for time being I plan on getting. The most out of these 2012 batteries and then maybe I'll go 48.

I would get the solid state upgrade from ScottyB first. You might be surprised in the performance it will give. A friend did this on his cart and he is very pleased.
