42 volt upgrade to 48 volt
My cart is described below. I am going to upgrade to 48 volt when existing batteries get too old and they are almost there. I have already installed compatible controller and solenoid. I like the torque on my current set-up and don't want to loose much of this when I upgrade, but I want the small boost to the top end speed with more volts. I am not that concerned with range as the cart is used for primarily mail box runs, golf and a little cruising inside my 1200 home development, but I don't want to go too light on the lead. I am thinking of staying with Trojans and the same battery dimensions so I don't have to do anything to the battery rack. What would be the recommendations from the Buggies gone Wild Team? Also, I think I will have room for an on-board charger - any thoughts on this would also be very much appreciated.

Re: 42 volt upgrade to 48 volt
Going from 42V to 48V will up the speed (and torque) up to about 14%, if the other variables stay the same.
You also might pick up a bit more because 6 x 8V batteries weigh less than 7 x 6V batteries. Six 8V batteries will fit in the six place battery rack, opening up the space in front of the right-rear wheel for an on-board charger and a DC to DC converter for 12V accessories (if you don't already have one). The battery cables will most likely have to be replaced since the posts on 8V batteries are both on same side rather than staggered like they are on the existing 6V batteries. If you stick with Trojan batteries you have four options, three of them will give you less range than a good 42V battery pack made up of good T-105 batteries and one will give you more range. T-860 (8V-150AH) --- 23.8% less T-860 (8V-170AH) --- 13.7% less T-860 (8V-190AH) --- 3.5% less Ranger 160 (8V-204AH) --- 3.8% greater range ---------- For an on-board charger, use a Quick Charge: http://www.quickcharge.com/on-board-...-standard.html For a portable charger use a DPI Accusense: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/48v_Battery_Charger.html |
