Default Cracked Differential

I just purchased a 98 EZGO series cart. I've had it for a couple weeks, and just started doin maintenance to it. I decided to check the rear end oil, and after pulling the plug and reaching around with my finger, no oil? So I topped it off with 30w and drove it around, and parked it. Later I noticed a puddle of oil under it. After inspecting it, I found there is a crack on the back side of the differential. It kinda sticks out a little. And is a couple inches long. Cart drives fine, and doesn't make any weird sounds. My question is, can I just clean and JB Weld it to stop the leak?

Sure, that can be done. I'd be curios as to what caused it to crack though.

Yeah I wondered too. I replaced the factory 18" tires but one rear tire was different. It was a 18.5" so maybe that caused it?

Im thinking at some point a big failure occured inside that axle, with parts trying to leave out the side. I bet theres marks inside from impact. Another question.. If its quiet, how long do you suppose its been out of oil? They'll get noisey before long without oil.

well cgtech, i figured you were right. So I took the pan off and found lots of shavings in the oil. After examining the gears found a tooth gone off the passenger side gear. Found it still wedged between ring gear and the housing. Took a lot of work to get it out. finally got it out after pulling the cracked piece out of the back of the housing. only way it would come out. My question now is, where do i go from here?

Your easiest option is find a whole new axle. If you keep what you have now, you need all new gears, bearings & a new carrier, BUT that still leaves you with a hole to patch...... Look for a different axle. They are still available new from Ezgo, about $1k.

Just called my local dealer, they have a good used complete rear end for 350. Would it hurt anything to continue driving mine until it totally fails?

Uhhh, i guess not. I think it will start spitting more teeth off that spider gear pretty quick. If that happens you will lose propulsion and be stuck. I dont think i would do it, i hate walking home from where i drove to.

Yeah, my luck it would probably happen when I'm on the far side of the course.
