If one of the weights was outside normal position, I would say it is time to rebuild it. It probably not shifting correctly causing some of your problem. It will jump out again.

If the belt is worn and is thinner or stretched longer, couldn't this cause the clutch weight to kick out since the pulley has to move farther to grip the belt?

If I indeed have to rebuild the primary clutch, what parts would it require? Is it just weights and shims?

Well I got the new belt. It is about 1/16" thicker than the belt that was on it. I put it on and took it for a test drive. I got about 40 yards and "BOOM" the clutch broke. One of the clutch weights came out just as Craig said it would and when it did it took a piece of the pulley with it this time.

So.....

Now I need a clutch assembly. Anyone have a used stock clutch they'd like to part with?

Fixed the lurching problem that the cart was having. It turned out to be the throttle cable/governor bracket was out of adjustment. I pulled the airbox and noticed the carb was not returning to idle. The cart was lurching because once the engine fired up, it was already at half throttle or so. Runs smoothe now.

Thanks for all the help...

Did the clutch break because of the new belt, or would it have broken anyway? The belt on our new to us cart is worn a bit more than 1/16" and I'm going to be replacing it. Just didn't want the clutch to go BOOM!

Great site. I've learned quite a bit in the week we've had the cart. Just found out about the secondary clutch yesterday

Welcome Dave!

A new belt will not cause the clutch to go BOOM! Old worn out components will.
