G9, 23hp Vanguard charging system help!!
Hi everyone! First off thanks to everyone on this sight for all the great info!! I have a 23h Vanguard in my 1991 G9 and I need to know how to check the charging system. Battery is new, but has been dying on me lately (even more so when running the lights). Found this info online, is it accurate? Do I put the meter on the battery terminals?
Tanks a ton for any help!!!! "At a fast idle - perhaps 2200 rpm or so – the 10 or 15 ampere system should charge up to about 13.8 volts to 14.4 volts, even with your lights on. A partially discharged battery may take a long time to attain this voltage. Some of the reasons for a lack of charge are a bad electronic regulator, a bad stator coil, or a bolt that has dropped down the “V” of the engine and shorted out the stator winding." |

Yes, with the voltmeter attached to the battery you should see a measurable voltage increase at mid rpms .... Is this a recent install? New problem? Was working and quit?

you can run the red wire from the regulator right to the battery side of the solenoid.

Does the ignition key give you a "shock" when you touch it with the engine running?
