You will see the biggest gain from having the driven clutch machined.

How loose is your drive belt?
How low does it sit in the driven (back) clutch when stopped?
When in neutral and starting the engine, where does the belt actually start to grab the drive (front) clutch?
If the belt is loose for what ever reason, the drive clutch will have to close more to engage the belt and it will engage higher in the drive clutch acting like it is starting in 2nd or 3rd gear.
Same situation if the belt is starting off low in the driven clutch.

You can also change jets and air filter to get more power. Plowman's has designed several springs for different uses. They also have there own belt design that is a little wider and thicker.
