Default G1 Oil Injecter Pump

Due to the potential failure of the oil pump and subsequent "cooking" of the engine I have decided to either remove or disable the pump and go with a premix ie. Amsoil @ 100/1 in the gas tank. My question is this: Do I have to remove the pump or can I simply block the line and let it think that it is still pumping oil? Or should I actually take it off and make up a blanking plate?
Any ideas? I am new to the whole cart scene, the snowmobiles seem to be very reliable on the oil injection in my experience, but from what I have read on this site people seem to have trouble..............I know that the ultralight planes that run two strokes usually premix as well!

Good question. I'm in the process of putting mine back together and have been wondering the same thing.

Oil injection pumps are quite reliable, but these buggies are now 25-30 years old or so. Parts do wear out and fail. To avoid any potential problems with the pump siezing due to lack of lubrication, it would be best to remove it entirely. Pull the clutch , remove the gearcase and remove the pump from the inner half of the case. You must reinstall the inner half of the case or make up a metal plate to replace it, as it holds the crankshaft oil seal in the engine. Without it your seal will eventually blow out. Don't forget to plug off the injection port in the carb. There has been a lot of discussion about removing the pump and premixing, do a search of this forum to learn more. Click on "search", click on "advanced search"(third line down),put "oil premix" in the keyword space, and highlight "gas Yamaha" under "search in forum(s)"
