Big Problems
I really should know better.
Bought a cart this weekend G9, a bit abused. Asked the seller about the frame any problems, answered NO. Well guess what it is a big problem, but we got it welded. Found the muffler was shot, had holes drilled in it. A mess. So I'll get a new muffler no biggie. Engine seems fine. Front suspension a mess, Starts good, idles good, good top end. Guy pulls the dipstick for the oil while I was looking at the front end, says, Oil's good. I took him at his word. Just glanced up. Today I cleaned the engine a bit, pulled the dipstick.... not a drop of oil on the dipstick!!! Put a quart in it and came to full, so the crankcase was empty!! Lying sack of crap. Started the engine, still sounds good, but not I got the worlds biggest mosquito fogger! Clouds of blue smoke. Pulled the spark plug. Black, with oil. Did a compression test 190#. So would like to hear some opinions. Anyone have any? |

Re: Big Problems
If the cart is lifted, you may have just overfilled the oil? When you lift the cart it changes the angle of the motor and the dip stick is scewed.
If that's the case, drain the oil, fill it with the reccomended amount of oil and let it settle for a while then scribe a new full line on the dip stick. |

If it were mine, I'd drain it and refil it with 1.16 quarts and see if it still smokes. |

Re: Big Problems
I know the book says 1.16, but the cap on the motor says 1 quart. I'd do 1 quart and try it.

Re: Big Problems
I put 1 qt. in it and it came to the top of the full mark on the dipstick. There is no sign of leakage under the cart so the only place the oil can go is out the exhaust.

Re: Big Problems
Swamp, did you drain the oil, then fill with new oil?
Also if you have to much oil, it will suck it out through the valve cover hose and deposit in the air filter housing, saturating the air filter. |

Re: Big Problems
You got took I'd say, people here have done the same thing. The oil ring goes bad so they drain/burn most of the oil out and sell it that way not smoking. They can have good compression with a bad oil ring. Now if you are lucky its overfilled and puking into the airbox, problem is they usually don't fog that way they just trash the filter.
You always drain and fill with 1qt for a G9, lifted or not. The stick will read around half full then if its lifted and that is your new full mark, never use more than one quart lifted or not. If you have it puking out or smoking at one quart you have another problem. |

Re: Big Problems
Oh I got took big time. The guy lied about everything every step of the way.
Every question I asked he lied, right to my face. Now I have a POS cart that I don't want to dump more money into. In order to get it running right I will need to do a complete engine overhaul. Suspension overhaul, shocks etc. Need to find a donor cart for frame pieces to weld them in correctly not some half assed tac job. Or another frame New front tires. Muffler, oil cap. etc. I'm just not sure I want to throw any more money at this. About the only good thing is the trans and rear end seem OK. But then again I don't know enough about the clutch trans to know what is good and what isn't. By the time I finish I could have more in it than scrapping it and going out and buying another cart. If it was just the engine then I could say OK, I'll rebuild it. But with the frame etc. Now if I can find a good cart with a good frame somewhere close I would think about doing a rebuild. |

Re: Big Problems
What do you want to do with the cart? You can drop one of these in for ~$300 and have a runner, though it might be a tight fit with no lift. Or you could just toss rings into it, it might have some blowby but would run ok. Putting the large engine in takes some fabrication but sure is fun to drive now, and you can use the stock starter and clutch with an adapter that is about $50. If you ebay you can find a muffler, though I would not put a stock one back on unless you want it really quiet. Near any 10hp or more lawn muffler will work, or if you want it louder use an ATV muffler, just have to get a flange and pipe/etc., well actually you can use the flange off the stock one. I know a guy with one not sure if he wants to sell it or what, don't know what they are worth. With any airbox or muffler mods to flow more air you need to yet richer, I just hogged the jet out with a torch tip cleaner until it ran right.
