89 marathon, starter only rocks engine
When attempting to start my 89 gas Marathon the starter will only "rock" the engine, it will not turn it. If I remove the plug, (release compression), the starter will easily turn the engine. Any ideas what the problem is???

This sounds like it could go either way. Your starter bindings maybe damaged and under a load it doesn't have the power to turn the motor over or there could be something with the actual motor that is locking up.

yes make certain your battery is good and than pull a few of the rubber inspection plugs from end of starter to see how low brushes are.......................
