Ok guys, I just went to check manuals and parts available, these 2 marathon I have here seems to have exactly the same workaround on welding so it seems it's a factory job. I am checking the rod with ball joint for this model and it is sold separately. Seems that it was welded right at the end of the thread and probably because it was originally too short and to add strength. So yes I think you will need to cut that one and drill a hole again and re-weld the newer rod, I am including 2 pictures of what is available with part #. You can find this at the sponsors web sites.
