1988 or 1992
Hi all,
first off, this is a great form. lots of good info and thanks for the great helpers posting. The story goes.. I needed a cart for hauling stuff around the property and to get the trash out to the curb...1/2 mile away. Next thing I know I am working on two project cart. Lots of fun. I got the 1988 cart put a 5 inch lift on it, got batteries and got it going. Its in ok shape and got some 10 inch wheels on the way. I got a 1992 that I am cleaning up and got another 5 inch lift kit for it. The problem is.. the wife will only let me keep one. Over all the 1988 is in better shape but uses the older controller set up. the 1992 has the curtis controller. Any thoughts ? My buddies told me to quit will I was ahead and keep the 1988 since it's working and get rid of the one that is not. I am not sure what the pros and cons are between the two controllers. mahalo for help joe |

The 1988 has a controller? Shouldn't it have the resistor coils? I say put all the best stuff on the nicest cart and sell the other. The controller's for the 1992 are very expensive - something to think about...

They have 2 very different drive systems. the 88 is a resistor coil cart ... when you step on the gas full power is drawn from the pack and what you don't use is wasted by the resistor coils. The 92 has a solid state speed controller. It draws only the power you ask for..... 2 very different systems.....

Ahhhh.... so many different ways to go here. Why do you think the 88 is in better condition then the 92? The 88 is probably a resistor cart as noted already. The brake system is a little different also. Body is the same except the rocker panels, cup holders are different I think two vs four. It would help to post a lot of pictures. I wish I had your problem, sounds like "fun" to me.

Sorry for the mix in terms. The 88 is a resister coil and the 92 is the curtis. they both control the speed so I call both controllers, my bad. Will post pics tonight. I think the 88 is in better shape because it was better protected from the elements and the 92 was outside. From the above posts, it sounds like the resister coil is low tech but works. The curtis is high tech but expensive if it breaks. All being equal, which would have more power and or speed ? If I choose to upgrade the 88 with a curtis controler could I ? I pulled a unit out of another cart which had a curtis controller and some other boxes bolted together. But will test it later. Is the 88 limited in its upgrade options because it uses a resister coil ?

The other boxes bolted together are probably the solenoid and potentiometer. That's basically what you would need to switch over from resistor.

ok, here are the pics of the carts. The sea green cart is the 88. I put a 5 inch lift kit and wrapped seat backs and put new batteries. the 92 is a little more rusty, the bag holder is rusted beyond repair. I do have another plastic front cowel and shock cover and lift kit for the 92. Beside the resister coil and front axel the cart are similar. I maybe over thinking this and am incline to just keep the 88 and move the roof, rocker edges, and driver side fender from the 92 over to the 88. Unless the 92 has more way more power because of the curtis controller I will just stop work on the 92 and sell it as is.

One thing to consider is the future. If after you start using your cart you are not happy with the speed or power it has the controller cart drive system has many options for increasing power and speed. That is not the case with the resistor cart.

How is the frame in the 92. Being outside surrounded by salt water must be harsh on metal. I think you need to take a close look at the battery tray area on both. The resistor carts like to run WOT all the time, the controller is more adjustable speed control. I think you can swap out any of the body parts between the two carts. The thing that changed between the 88 and 92 were the side rockers which require a modification to the rear fender. The cup holder which can be swapped with minor modification. I think the way the front bumper mounted is different. I would think about taking the best of both carts and parting out whats left over although shipping costs might be high? If the controller and potentiometer are good I would install that in whatever frame you choose.

Thanks for the input. yea the battery tray on the 92 was in bad shape. I beefed it up all ready. my first original plan was move the best parts over and part out the rest. The second original plan after talking to the local EV guy was fix both and sell one. I am still trying to find a straight answer on given the stock set up of both, with no plans for upgrades do both cart have the same power (going up hill) and speed ? I know the resistor coil is less efficient in conserving battery power since excess power is just lost to heat. But does this mean less power is going to the motor ? plan C is to talk my wife in to letting me keep both
