Default Jerky clutch

I've a 1984 G1. It seems a bit too jerky when starting off (abrupt lurch). Should I lube the primary clutch. And if so, how do I do that? Does clutch have to come off engine shaft? How do I disassemble the clutch? What to use to lube? As you see I'm starting from scratch here

1984's could have one of 2 clutch styles. Is your clutch aluminum with the bolt showing or is there a gold colored cap with screws holding it on?

Aluminum w/ big center bolt showing. Bolt also has "Keeper" washer under it. (One bent up side, two ears that fit over key-way on the other). What's the best way to get around "keeper Washer" IF I am to remove center bolt?

You have to bend the ear of the keeper flat so you can unscrew the bolt. Use a hammer and chisel. If you break the keeper, just make a new one out of sheet metal.

1) Broken keeper
2) Drill 1/2 inch hole in a piece of sheet metal
3) Center keeper on hole and trace around it. Flip keeper over to get the outline of the broken half.
4) Cut it out with tinsnips or a Dremel tool.
5) Install

So once I'm inside the clutch is there anything I can do to make it "engage" a bit less abruptly? Is there something to clean and lube. Or is it supposed to be run "Dry"?

Yes just clean everything real good & put some light grease on the moving parts. I use lithium grease, or dry grafite. Hope this helps.

The moving sheave of the clutch has a bushing on the inside with an Oring at each end.
Once you pull the bolt and outside of the clutch you will find a snap ring.
Remove the snap ring and the sheave will slide off, it is spring loaded.
This needs a finger wipe of grease inside the bush and on the Orings.
Reassemble and it should engage smoother.
