TXT charger bad? How can I troubleshoot it?
Our cart is an EZ-GO TXT, 2009 model 36V.
The charger that came with it is a PowerWise QE. The other day my wife parked the cart too far from the charger, and when my son came out he tripped on the charging cord, which was plugged into the cart and charging it. When he did, it broke the bracket holding the D-plug. Now the charger won’t turn on when plugged into the cart. No hum, no LEDs, nothing. (Yes, the plastic bracket for the plug is broken, but that happened once before (different cause) and I was able to continue charging by just plugging into the main part of the socket. I later epoxied the socket back into place, but it’s now broken again.) I’ve checked the voltage that the charger would see, and it’s about 37.5V. FWIW the reed switch has already been removed and the red sense wire is connected to the main positive terminal in the socket. I took apart the plug and connections seemed OK. Same for the socket. I tried to take off the cover of the charger, but it’s very difficult to remove it because of the AC and charger wires going into the bracket, so I stopped. Peeking inside, nothing seemed to be loose - the two cables all seemed to have their leads still plugged into the contact blades on the charger. How can I troubleshoot further? I gather that most seem to consider the Powerwise QE charger trash, and I’m not averted to buying the ~$400 Lester Summit II charger from Carts Unlimited (I’ve purchased a controller and solenoid from Scotty). That said, it was working just fine before and if it’s reasonable to fix, I’d like to do that so I can continue using the cart. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks. PB |

May have damaged the wires in the harness going to the cart. If you can get to the wires inside the charger coming from the cart check for voltage there

Re: TXT charger bad? How can I troubleshoot it?
Well, I got lucky.
Since it might have been damaged anyway, I semi-destructively removed the plastic grommet on the DC cable so that I could feed it into the cover and rotate the cover more open. When doing so, I was able to determine that the shock had disconnected one lead (green ground lead) enough to break contact. (It may have been poorly connected to begin with given that the plastic cover was too far forward, potentially compromising the amount the spade/blade connection could overlap.) Reconnecting this was enough to make the charger start to work as it had before. Easiest potential fix, for once…. Back in the saddle, again! Thanks |

Green in the dc cord was probably the trigger wire for the charger. AC cord it is ground.
