Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
It's really difficult to judge condition by photos, you might have to take it out and give it a once over. Look for wear marks, flat spots on moving parts, dirt/oil buildup, and look at the sheave faces for wear, they should be nice and flat. Or you can install the belts and take it for a spin and you might get lucky. But if the clutch needs some maintenance you will soon have problems. The biggest issue with the clutches is dirt/oil/grease and lack of maintenance. They will wear out quickly if not maintained.

Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
The 3 "rollers" should have NO flat spots. The "sliding sheave" should have little play in the directions of the green arrows. Grab it at the outer edge and try to "flex" it in the direction of the green arrows, not talking about sliding "in-and-out" closer and farther from fixed sheave, but "rocking motion" like loose bearings or Bushings. Keep in mind the axis of the crankshaft, the sliding sheave needs to operate in a straight line with the crankshaft to work correctly.

Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
Should operate "inline" with the crank, should not "rock" much like a "wobbly" wheel..

Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
You can order a new dust cover for your clutch to help keep dust and debris out. Before installing the dust cover, add a very thin layer of grease to the top of your fly weights and rollers.

I checked both areas that you listed. Each roller has a flat spot on it. One has a larger flat spot than the other two, but all can be felt. Also, as far as the assembly towards the driver side of the belt, it will move from driver to passenger side slightly, about 1/8th of an inch. This being said, should I replace the complete clutch or send it to Plowman to be rebuilt? How hard is it to remove? Should I buy a complete assembly from Plowman or Yamaha? Thanks! Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
Send it for rebuild. If you have puller bolt, clutch removal is usually very easy.

Thanks, I will contact Plowman's tomorrow and see how the procedure works. I will also pick up the puller bolt.

Just got my seats back today and put back together. I took the cart for a spin and it runs smooth as butter now. Maybe I won't need to do any major work to the clutch right now after all. The belts must have really made a difference. There is no longer a delay between switching from forward to reverse, no belt squeak, and drivetrain noise/vibrations are gone. Here are some pics of the finished cart.

Re: 1999 Yamaha G16 Clutch Help
Just like most broken things, the longer you continue to drive it with the clutches in the condition they are, the more parts will be damaged, increasing repair costs.
