New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Ok Guys and Gals, strap on your thinking caps. I will give you what I know so far. Please give me some paths to explore.
So normally I am fairly savvy with small engines, but this one is acting very odd and I am stumped where to go next. Here is the background. I picked this up 2 weeks ago. The PO explained to me that he "Replaced the head gasket" but in the process of reassembly broke the rocker support and could not locate a new one. "The cart sat in a corner for a while, he came across a new cart and decided to sell this one." So I started with the basics. Drained the fuel and oil. Cleaned the carb. Rebuilt the fuel pump. Replaced the rocker support, and set the rockers with the procedure in the manual. Put a New battery in. Checked compression on my Harbor Freight gauge I am getting 130 psi. Here is what it is doing. When I try to start it. I am getting fuel spitting back out of the carb as it turns over. A back fire once and a while. The engine does not have tool marks on the crank case bolts and they are pretty dirty. The bolts for the head have recently been messed with. It does look like someone tried to get the flywheel off, but the threads still have rust, so I do not believe they were successful. I am kinda stumped where to go next. Suggestion on where to look next are what I am looking for. Once I have achieved Suck / Squish / Bang / Blow. Then the real fun begins. Striping the body, making some fun parts, and a lift. There will be pics of all the fun. Thanks all in advance. |

Sounds like you have a valve set too tight. If you can not find TDC perfectly you can adjust the valves one at a time -- as one valve starts to go down -- adjust the other. Or the worst -- a bent valve. There should be nothing coming out the carb when cranking.

I will try that tomorrow. The book I have says .003" for valve clearance. From you experienced people on the G9 motors. Is this too tight???

Welcome aboard bronco top dead center on the "squish" stroke as you call it is crucial.

or,someone jacked with the starter and has the wires hooked up wrong and the motor is spinning in the wrong direction.

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Valves at .004, (at top dead center) 130 is way low, should be in the 160 range with throttle wide open. I would take the valve cover off and roll the motor over by hand and watch the valve train move to see if it moves in sequence. The guy really had to strong arm something to break the rocker stand, so a bent valve/push rod or rocker arm is not out of the question. Nor is the starter wiring for direction!!

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Mike Mac / Golf cart guy - Watching the valve train, the motor is rolling in the correct direction with the starter. I did verify my wiring against the schematic in my book as well.
I checked the push rods on my surface plate. They are very strait. cfherrman - I didn't think you can mess with the timing on these. If you can, please let me know how. My manual does not say anything about adjusting it. I will reset valve lash this afternoon. I will step it up to .004" Thank you guys so far with your help. I was starting to loose my sanity a bit. Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
The ignitor could be toast and timing way advanced, if you can swap it with a friends cart and see what it does. The ignitor advances to 28 Degrees I think it is at 2500, but zero at idle so it starts easy. Sometimes they go bad and stay advanced all the time. So they run ok at 2500 and more but not so good under that. They can also have issues with the plug and contacts. Its on the fuel tank. They are not cheap so make sure that is the issue before you get one, check overything else as they don't go bad very often.
I have had a fouled plug do the same thing, they like to do that especially if run with bad mixture such as a leaking airbox. Sometimes you can pull the plug wire off the plug, then put it on until the clip touches the plug (metal clip inside), then lift it back off about 1/8" and try to run it. It can make a fouled plug fire that way, or my G9 would. That is one reason the bprs2 plug is better in G9s it fouls less. Or like posted it could be a mechanical issue with valvetrain or valves. You can also turn it by hand and listen for it leaking air out the intake valve (out the carb you have held open) on the compression stroke. The muffler comes off easy too you can do the same with that. |

Re: New to me G9, need some trouble shooting advice
Thanks Sho305. Hopefully when I am back out in the shop tonight I will try that.
I ended up breaking the plastic spacer between the carb and the head Sunday when I was out working on the cart. I didn't get much done after that. It just took the wind out of my sails for the day. But the local dealer has one in stock, so I will be picking that up today, along with a new plug. I did figure out one part of my issues. The float in the carb is more like an anchor. Every time the fuel pump pulsed I got a shot of fuel out the main jet. Also I had the valves set way too tight. It does not help that every time that I start to work on it a friend shows up with beer . That's when the mistakes happen. ;) |
