Default Long delay to start after depressing pedal - Yamaha G1

1984 G1 gas

Okay so I have stumbled upon more electrical issues it seems. When I depress the throttle pedal it takes like 4-5 seconds until the engine starts to turn over and take off.

I already bypassed the starter relay by snipping the 2 white wires on the relay plug and connecting them together.

Battery is brand new.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this long delay before the engine fires up after stepping on the gas pedal?

maybe a silly question spicy but where do you recommend getting starter brushes. Is this something that would be ok to get off e-bay or just stick with OE?

I don’t know if it is the starter brushes? Maybe? If they were bad wouldn’t I get the same delay when I jump power directly to the back of each solenoid?

Because when I jump power directly to fwd or rev solenoid there is not a delay...it starts spinning the motor immediately

FYI...the stop switch at the pedal is also new

The cart only had a short delay when I recently got it running good...but then after a few test drives I went to drive it the next day and it wouldn’t go...first time it did this I could hear a faint click noise in the starter relay (not the solenoids but the little square relay box) and it would not go. Then the second time there was no noise coming from the relay...this is what convinced me to just splice the two white wires together and bypass the relay.

But now there is even a longer delay before it starts spinning and fires up. Weird.

After quick inspection the starter brushes do in fact need replacement as you can tell by this picture...the brushes are worn down and resting below the level of the guide.

Maybe this condition is contributing to the delayed starting...but it is still weird how when I jump power directly to back of solenoid there is No delayed start.
