Front end rattle and oil change
Again with an older G9 things can get worn out but I wanted to get some opinions before I spend more money.
The front end rattles when going over rough terrain. Is that signs of worn out tie rod ends or are they just loose? Finally, I've lifted the cart six inches so do I have to take that into account when dumping the oil? I know it only takes 1 quart but should I raise up the rear end to make sure the engine is level before draining the oil to make sure I got all the old oil out? Thanks guys!!!! |

Re: Front end rattle and oil change
Did your lift kit reuse the original spindles and hubs? IF so I would bet the rattle is the king pins, but hard to say without knowing what lift kit you installed.
I would jack the front end up off the ground, and start wiggling things and checking for play. You should be able to duplicate the rattle by hand. AS for the oil change, I don't think it really makes a big difference. Wouldn't hurt, just to try and get as much of the old out as you can, but re volume, I don't think there's THAT much left in there that it would make a lot of difference. |

Re: Front end rattle and oil change
My cart has a 6" lift and the first time I changed the oil I noticed that not all of the oil would drain out at that angle. I have a setup that is normally used to bleed brakes and I used it to remove the remaining oil. I don't remember just how much was left but I found out for me it was easier to back it up on to the ramps for my trailer to do the job. I only need to change the oil once a year so I do it just before loading the cart on my trailer for the annual trip to the gulf coast for the summer. I wouldn't say I am concerned about the amount of oil left behind, but more about what contaminations remain in this created reservoir, without draining or flushing it out. It is good to have more than one point of view so we can decide what works best for each of us.

Re: Front end rattle and oil change
I used a set of ramps to get her closer to level. Almost a full quart drained out so I'm good with that.
As for the front end rattle I quickly figured out the culprit. There is a screw with a jamb nut on top. I loosened the nut and screwed in the screw just a bit and it took the play out of the steering arm/shaft. I may have tightened it too much because shes binding up just a wee bit. Thanks again for all the great advice. Great site!!!! |
