We should count my misaligned belt theory out. I worked on the clutch alignment today and after pulling the engine out 2 times to rework the motor mounts, the belt slips just as bad as before. I would like to look into the clip on the clutch but not sure what to look for or where to begin. My other yamaha is running the exact same motor, clutch, tire size, belt, rear end setup and it climbs powerfully off road. Not sure what went wrong with this one.

I did some digging on here and it appears the c clip is a common problem. For those with the same problem read pages 2-3 and it will help you out.

I just looked and the c-clip is still there. Am I missing something?

Xtreme, I don't see any ramp shoes on your clutch. Are they there and I am just not seeing them or are they gone?

You are right! I was just reading spriddles post about ramp shoes and began thinking I dont see those on mine. Would this cause the belt slipping problem?

Well I guess I can't say 100 percent that it would cause your belt to slip, but it sure isn't helping things any. You should have three nylon ramp shoes on there.

I noticed the inside half of the clutch was loose compared to the other side. How do you install new ramp shoes? Does the clutch have to be taken apart?

There is a bushing on the inner clutch sheave. Have you ever changed that? They are often worn out especially if your inner sheave does not have a grease fitting. As far as installing shoes without taking the clutch off it may be possible but I doubt it. I guess it would depend on if there is any plastic remaining in the holes in the ramps. A lot of times the old plastic has to be driven out of the holes or even drilled out before the new shoes can be installed.

Your helix is toast, Dont worry about slides. Upgrade to the new style helix, It's a much stronger deal.

I'm sure you also lost the 1/3 turn of rotational preload when the slides broke thats why you have no power. The clutch is opening to easy.

Thanks for the replies! I will order the new helix and also install a torque spring while I'm in there.

Oh I forgot to mention about this sound it makes when driving around. It sounds like a growling or grinding noise coming from the diff area. Is this most likely related to the clutch problem?
