If you have a 1981, your solenoids should look like the ones in this pic. They are different than 1982-up models and work differently. Study the wiring diagrams in my earlier post, you should be able to rewire the buggy to use the newer solenoids. It may be easier to replace both with newer-style solenoids rather than mix them up.
Ky_mike's solenoid is an aftermarket replacement that is slightly different than the original solenoid. A different issue altogether.

Tell us what you did! Did you convert to the new solenoids, and if so, post how you did it.

Still no picture? I need to check it out also if you don't mind.

Also, do any of you guys know if after a g1 cranks up (running on gas) does the solenoid still continuously try to spin the starter motor or does it kick out at some point?

I'm in the same boat too. I also have the old style solenoids and am wanting to switch to the new style. I made the jumpers for the new solenoids out of some 3/8 copper tubing and flatened them out. Just not sure on how to wire it to the starter. I had a hell of a time with wiring the old ones. The guy I bought it from hacked the wiring all up. Took me a week to get it to run right cuz with the key in fwd it was actually running in reverse so timing was off. Don't want to go through that again. Any help would be appreciated!!!

attached is a drawing that might help ! the big problem I had was the four small wires that came out of a 4 wire plug coming from the CDI to relays .
