1985 2 cycle Looses spark when hot
Hello, I have a 1985 2 cycle cart that when you shut it off after its warmed up good and go to restart it there is no spark. If I'm looking at it correctly there is a pulser, a ignitor, and a ignition coil. Which of these would most likely be the problem? After it sits awhile the spark will come back but seems a little weak to me but will eventually start. Thanks, Dave

welcome to BGW ...............i think i would start with the coil, if your gonna replace parts its by far the cheapest of the 3 and a good chance thats the problem..................................

I have also experienced a plug that did the same. It seems to me that once a 2 stroke plug craps out no amount of cleaning cheers it up. That's the cheapest solution.

Re: 1985 2 cycle Looses spark when hot
When I went backwards replacing stuff, i went plug - coil - and then did the HEI mod in lieu of replacing an expensive ignitor ... But you can do one better.
If the plug has been replaced and you're still in the boat you're in, you can kill two birds (and save a ton of $) by doing the HEI mod and high-output universal coil at the same time (the factory ignitors sometimes won't fire a high-efficiency coil so to replace the coil as a test meand a high $ factory coil, wither way the cost is far higher than just nuking both the coil and the ignitor at once and going HEI, along of course with the inherent benifits of a hotter, more consistant spark that the mod will give you). Just my two cents, but an aftermarket, factory-style coil will run you $75-ish, and a new ignitor between $105-120 - the entire HEI conversion replaces both the coil and ignitor and will cost you around $50 or less front-to-back, and is an easy 20-minute install |
