Wide open throttle or jerk and backfire! Grrrr
Hi guys!
I searched and searched so if this has been answered please give me a heads up. 1998 Gas EZGO. After making several modifications I have messed something up and I cannot tell what it is. Were I smart I would have done one thng at a time but I got in a yank, tore it all apart, put it back together and am now chasing my tail. The cart is either "wide open" or burps a back fire and I let it coast back down to low speed. There is no slow in this cart and that wont work in the camp ground. We have 300 acres of trails so I did some mods, but have to maintain 5mph on the road. I look like a dink with my cart jumping and jerking and backfiring. Please help. Here is what I did: 1.) 4" lift 2.) 22/11-8 Mudbuster tires 3.) Adjusted the valves with new feeler gauge precisely as described on the forum. 4.) Removed, disassembled, cleaned, and adjusted the carb. Everything looked really good but may not have it adjusted right. Could not tell any difference in how it ran by carb adjustments. 5.) New plugs 6.) Brand new primary clutch - factory 7.) Torquer 28 degree clutch 8.) HD belt - Maybe too big? 9) Tightened governer spring. Does not sputter out on top end. It starts right up, no acceleration hesitation, no jumping, jerking, or top end stall out. I did the carb and the new primary clutch at the same time. For some reason the new primary seems to have taken the cart from slow and torque to way too fast. Is this possible? It is the same primary? Could it be in the microswitches or in the carb? All I know is I took a great running driving cart and made it into an expensive piece of..... Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks guys! Last edited by CartBuster; 06-09-2012 at 07:50 AM.. with by passing your governer you made your throttle an on off switch. try and adjust your throttle so it closes all the way put a spring on it to pull it shut. that will help with the back fire. you are constantly giving it gas when you pull foot off the gas all you are doing right now is shutting off the spark, but gas is still running in that is where the back fire is comming from. by by passing the governer and putting torque spring on the jerky take off is the nature of the beast.

Re: Wide open throttle or jerk and backfire! Grrrr
That makes sense as I removed the primary on the bench so the motor came out. I had the throttle cable unhooked as well as everything else. So you are saying to add a return spring to the throttle cable, and loosen the governor spring? Do you think it could also be in the throttle cable adjustment?
You also mentioned the jumping jerky take off was the result of the new secondary and HD belt correct? I can live with that if I can keep the darn thing under 25mph and still have the torque I need to play in sand. I don't need or want speed. I need and want torque. I tried smaller tires but get hung on ruts as I run the cart on the same trails I run the RZR S. Will I lose torque by loosing engine RPM? |

Re: Wide open throttle or jerk and backfire! Grrrr
here's a pic of the correct spring setup, you need a 3/4"x1/4" spring between the carb arm and cable stop (this pic is of the setup on a 2-stroke cart but it's basically the same deal):
Adjusting the cable is actually a "sight and sound" event - you want it set so that when you press the pedal, you *just* hear the click of the throttle microswitch BEFORE the arm on the carb moves at all, that way you ensure you have ignition BEFORE you start dumping fuel on the situation, it's a bit finicky to get exact, but once you do it'll smooth things out nicely. |

The way you explained that it makes perfect sense! Thanks a ton. Heading to the campground this next weekend on Lake MI. I'll repost how it turns out. Thanks again.

Is there a way to get more torque out of that excess rpm? I need the tall tires, and cannot afford to change the engine. Would a shorter belt help? Would that control the ability of the primary to close all the way? Also, does the secondary open or is that just essentially a pulley?

Re: Wide open throttle or jerk and backfire! Grrrr
the primary closes as RPM's increase, and the secondary opens to change the pulley ratio. A slightly shorter belt (I'm running -1" on my 8 DOES make a noticeable difference in takeoff speed and especially on the hills, the top end sacrifice is only about 2mph or so - definitely worth the trade.
I'm hoping this means the cart is running normally again, anyhow !!! |
