Default Brushes in starter/ Generator

Recently I took starter/generator apart and out of the 4 brushes,2 were shot, other 2 had nicks in them. I replaced brushes that were a bit smaller. Ran great for 14 days, took s/g apart again, same thing. So I'm thinking I didn't set brushes the same. Put another set in and made them the same length, tension. Ran cart for 10 days, took s/g apart, all looked good.so I'm I worrying about a problem that don't exist,or is the armature bad
