Re: performance lack after plowmans kit
Hmmmm. I did adjust the valves cold maybe their too far out? That still wouldnt cause a performance decrease but could be the cause of the smoke I had under load.

Re: performance lack after plowmans kit
Valve adjustment is a definite cause of power loss,a loose setting delays valve opening(retarded valve timing)thus dropping power. These motors are very touchy with tuning, slight variances from specs can cause performance issues.I had the valves a little too tight, not quite .003",and it was popping bad.Reset it and it was fine.Hot-Set is more consistent(and painful at times!),because the expansion-rate is usually consistent

Re: performance lack after plowmans kit
Don wants the engine good and hot. Several quarter mile runs then in the shop to adjust to .008 on a hot engine. The first time i removed my valve cover to check, the valves from factory wettings were driver side valve .004 and the passenger side was .003. Set them to .008 and gained an additional mph or 2. Before adjusting the valves, Don had me to do several 1/4mile runs and after each run i would get slower and slower by just a touch. Now there set to .008 and my runs stay consistant.

Re: performance lack after plowmans kit
Yep,that's why a Hot-Set is better, since the expansion equalizes everything. If you set them at say .006 cold, they may decrease to .003 hot,now its under spec.Keep in mind, those specs don't really account for increased wear either, since a cart in its "normal" use, wouldn't get the high rpm use and associated wear that they get from recreational use.
