Diode and Resistor Size
I redo buggies for a hobby, something to do since retiring.
Sold a buggie to a man, who I have since found out is board president for a large resort. I guess he liked the buggie because he has asked me to upgrade their fleet of security carts. I will adding 500 amp controllers, 2 ga cables and HD solenoids. I'm trying to keep cost down, so I'm looking at buying diodes and resistors from an electronics supplier. I just unsure of exactly what I need. Right now I'm looking at these. Are they the correct ones? http://www.newark.com/on-semiconduct...ial/dp/42K2935 http://www.newark.com/ohmite/20j470e...10w/dp/66K6904 |

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
Club Car 3 Amp Diode. Solenoid diode for high amp Club Car electric. Recommended for Alltrax Controllers, use with 200 amp and up solenoids.

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
Muddog,
You can find details of the resistor and diode requirements in the Alltrax Technical Note 010 at: http://www.alltraxinc.com/files/Doc1...ns-Learned.pdf I picked up resistors and diodes for my cart at a local electronics supplier. If I recall correctly, the diodes were in a 5 pack at about 20 cents each. The resistors were about $2 each. Regards, 3CW |

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
Real dumb question (I'm electrically challenged) what if you only did one of those things, and not the other. Would damage to the solenoid happen?
I know "why would you do one, and not the other," but I'm just curious if one of those components went bad, if damage would occur to the solenoid. |

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
I don't think it is the solenoid as much as it is protection for the controller and electrical system.
After the circuit opens by the solenoid the diode absorbs the stored energy and the precharge resistor prevents arching across its terminals. Either would cause severe damage..... |

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
I could not consolidate or rephrase this information any better - short read = see the Alltrax document

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
Once again, I'm electrically challenged, my question is if one of those things fail does it wreck anything. I have read the Alltrax (actually almost all of the PDF's) prior to this post, and it makes sense, just wondering if both pieces have to be working.
It sounds like they don't have to be, that they are doing two completely separate functions, but then I'm falling back on my excuse of lack of knowledge on electrical stuff beyond the basics. |

Re: Diode and Resistor Size
The service manual for my 2005 IQ states that if the diode fails clip it off the solenoid and replacement is not needed because a diode that serves the same purpose is located within the controller...
