A week away, upgraded 1987 shuttle now has little power
The 1987 shuttle with the recent upgrade to 48 volts (and the admiral motor thanks Scotty). Prior to this problem, but after the upgrade this ~12' long 6 seater was able to get 12-14 mph downhill, up to 25 on the same downhills, and 17-18 on flat ground. Like 4 mph up those uphills today though. Brakes are not stuck. Stock size tires in pretty bad condition.
Anyway, we went to Mexico on vacation last week and it apparently rained very hard while gone. I had it in the driveway with a tarp over the seats to keep all electronics dry, except the gas pedal. Since I have gotten back, it has very little power. Solenoid clicks, she goes, no error codes - but it just has less than half the power that it had when I left. I drove it about 4 miles with the weak power and had no problems, just much slower. So in my reading, I understand that I could potentially have some water in the pot box under the pedal. I read to take it apart and apply a hair dryer to properly dry everything. No other electronics should have gotten wet, but if they did, what would be the next place I should look? Pack voltage is 50.6 or so and it only drops to 49s under throttle. I probably won't have a chance to play with it until this weekend, but I'd like to have a good plan of action. Though it probably isn't the problem, I have ordered new 2 awg welding wire. The 4awg I just put in was an amazon special and it was more like speaker wire (numerous thin strands). Some of the connections seem to be a bit flimsy with that thin wire so I am just going to replace all. Thanks fellas. |

Re: A week away, upgraded 1987 shuttle now has little power
High strand count, with thin strands is a good thing, but welding cable is superior as far as corrosion and abrasion resistance. Bad connections to the terminals can be checked by driving a bit, and then feeling for excess temperature on each and every cable terminal. I'm not familiar with your type buggy, but maybe by getting wet, it is running in 1/2 speed, which is normally engaged in reverse. Does reverse also seem slower than before it got wet?
