Default Broke Shift Cable...I think???

Ok, I had no clue how to describe this so I took a picture. This is my shifter cables on my G16.

I can get it to go in reverse fine but when going into drive it seems the cable is stuck. I got to looking at it and noticed the two parts I pointed at with the red arrows aren't working the same way as the parts I pointed at with the blue arrows.

the parts with the blue arrows stay locked together and the parts with the red arrows don't. Do I have to buy a new cable? Or can I just fix the cable?

I can't tell how they are supposed to stay together, I figured maybe they are broke. Any advise would be much appreciated!

the cables may just be sticky and stretched some
causing the one not to retract.

This is good news in that it sounds like I won't have to buy anything. It is certainly cold! I think it was 6 degrees when it stopped working.

All you need is a little adjustment and a few drops of wd40. If one is broken, you can hardly move the shifter either way.

I personally would use WD40 for a cable, WD40 gums up over time, They make special lubes for cables or use slick50 lube.

WD40 is a water disbursement product not a lubricant.

I was going to use some PB Blaster, but haven't yet. It's been freakin cold outside! I did manually move the bracket at the transmission and I could get it to move. I'm thinking it's a frozen water problem now. When it gets above freezing and if it doesn't work still I'll lube it with something.
