Hi all....newbie here. I bought a 82 club car and the steering column seems to wobble left and right and a little up and down. My question is....can this be fixed? Thanks

Re: 82 club car steering column wobble
By "wobble", are you saying that the entire column is loose in all directions?

Re: 82 club car steering column wobble
Steve,
Yes it seems to wobble up down left right in the housing to the steering box. was not sure if there is bearings in there. I also heard I could retrofit with rack and pinon. The cart will not be used much, mainly in the month of august. I don't mind putting a little money into it as I got it for s song.. It runs well. It is just bugging me that the column wiggles. I do have a fair amount of steering wheel play also about a 1/3 of a turn. Any help would be grateful. Thank you for responding. Ron aka THE NEWBIE |

Re: 82 club car steering column wobble
I have a 81 DS, and had the same problem. The steering box is called a ross box, and they are obsolete. Never fear as this is a very simple box to repair. There is an adjustment screw on the top of the box. It has a lock nut you must loosen. once you loosen it you can adjust the screw by tightening it. While you're tightening Have someone turn the steering wheel slowly back n forth but only in the sloppy part This will allow you to adjust it without over tightening.
As for the column movement. The column is attached to a worm gear. The pin you just tightened rides in the pitch of this to move the steering arm back n forth. At the bottom of this shaft is a bearing. I don't know if it being bad will give you the movement you're talking about. It sounds to me like you simply have a loose bolt on the housing that holds the whole assembly on the cart. |

Re: 82 club car steering column wobble
this is the pivot arm removed from the box. The angle pin you see is the underside of that adjustment bolt i told you about. |

Inside of the box. The spiral worm gear you see is what that pin rides in. If you need a new pin they can be ordered. |
