I pulled the exhaust manifold off and did not see a square hole in it.

If you have fuel coming out of the vent tube, the needle/seat is likely not shutting off the fuel supply. One of three things will cause that on a 2 or 4 stroke motor. A float that is not adjusted correctly, a bad needle/seat(unlikely), or a fuel pump that is supplying too much pressure. On a 2 stroke, a reed that fails to close can also cause it.

Will a bad Reed also cause it to backfire? It spits out the fuel when it is backfiring. I just assumed that the pressure from the backfiring was causing the fuel to spit out. I believe I have it adjusted correctly(maybe even so it shuts it off a little early) and it still does it when it backfires.

Is it backfiring through the exhaust or through the intake?

Hmmm. I guess I've only noticed it on the exhaust side for sure.

An exhaust backfire is a sign of running too rich, or the ignition is delayed too much. It's hard to delay the ignition that much on a 3pg motor. I would focus on the carb, or the reeds.

Thanks. I cleaned the carb again last night and it still did it. I will pull the reeds out tonight so I can inspect them and clean them up. Could a bad pulser coil cause the timing to be off?
