Just an opinion, but parts are actually quite plentiful off-the-shelf for the 86-91 2-strokes as well as the 91-up 4-strokes these days. The stock 244cc 2-Stroke 2PG will run circles around any of the 295/350cc 4-strokes out there AND have the added bonus of being super easy to work on as well as inexpensive (a complete top-end rebuild will run you well under $200 and about 2-3hrs if you're handy w tools) ... As to parts, lift kits, rims, tires, seats, brush guards, cargo baskets and boxes, etc are everywhere and generally cheaper than for the TXT's, the only odd stuff that seems real scarce is some of the trim, individual carb components (although a new carb is under $100 so NBD), Reed Valves, and the 89-up mufflers.

Keep in mind too that if You find a 1988, those were the one-year "HO" model, they put out an extra 2hp and it's a definite difference (thanks to a larger carb, high-flow exhaust, etc) - the top end on my 1988 is only 2-3mph faster than my 87 (mid 20's vs low 20's) BUT it gets there a lot faster and the hills mean almost nothing to that cart.

Given that you can often find Marathons for well under $1k (or if 85-down often at that $4-500 point) they're a real deal if You're looking to get into customizing, especially given the lower parts cost (as well as the fact that when "built" the retail prices are similar to those of a newer cart if done correctly)

Thanks Brew but, I'm not into 2 stroke anything, I really can't stand them if you want to know the truth... I always worry on the injector will go out and with premix, it stink like an SOB. I have no problems with changing the oil every spring and adding straight gas to the tank! Plus, I can do a bit more with a 2 speed rear end with a build... I think it was racing 2 stroke dirtbikes and quads during high school that pushed me away from 2 cycle engines. But man were they fast!!

brew, love the avatar i still cant kill my old rattling 2 stroke and its the only 2 stroke ive ever owned that has no smell since its 128.1 mix ratio i guess..i run it a lil extra but not much..had my sister behind me for many hrs and asked if she smelled the cart and she said never..hard to belive but mine never smokes or smells like a 2 stroke, and its old and worn big time imo.. it is pretty fast too!
hopefully i will also be happy with the newer elec start 13hp honda and not slower..until it grows into a big block someday

88'-94' Marathons will swap with the earlier years on pretty much everything. They went 4-stroke in 91' or 92'.The rear from a 4-stroke will bolt in any earlier Marathon. The front-springs are 2" Shorter on 88'-94' ,than on Earlier Marathons,TXT-Medalist are 4" longer than 88' -94' Marathon. The Front-Axle changed in 88' I think,But it still swaps, you need the matching spindles to go with it.They are pretty easy to Big-Block too.Look at my albums for pics of Dads' 90' with a 16hp Vannie!Unhook the Oil-Injection and pre-mix 1-1/2 oz.per gal. if you run it hard with the govenor unhooked(100:1)
